Software Review: KisMAC - 5 Stars

KisMAC is an open-source and free stumbler/scanner application for Mac OS X. It has an advantage over MacStumbler / iStumbler / NetStumbler in that it uses monitor mode and passive scanning.

KisMAC supports several third party PCMCIA cards: Orinoco, PrismII, Cisco Aironet, Atheros and PrismGT. USB devices with Intersil Prism2, Ralink rt2570 and rt73, and Realtek rtl8187 chipsets are in progress towards full support as well. All of the internal AirPort hardware is supported for scanning.

Software Review: Cain & Able - 5 Stars

Cain & Abel is a password recovery tool for Microsoft Operating Systems. It allows easy recovery of various kind of passwords by sniffing the network, cracking encrypted passwords using Dictionary, Brute-Force and Cryptanalysis attacks, recording VoIP conversations, decoding scrambled passwords, recovering wireless network keys, revealing password boxes, uncovering cached passwords and analyzing routing protocols. The program does not exploit any software vulnerabilities or bugs that could not be fixed with little effort. It covers some security aspects/weakness present in protocol's standards, authentication methods and caching mechanisms; its main purpose is the simplified recovery of passwords and credentials from various sources, however it also ships some "non standard" utilities for Microsoft Windows users.

Elgin Community Network Completes 60 mile wireless footprint

As the wheels of time move forward, the ECN and its helpers (way too many to list) has completed applying broadband, switches, DHCP server, and launches wireless meeting a 60 mile foot print plus. We are extreemly pleased to see the restoration of a wireless footprint removed in December 2007.

The city of Elgin Texas now has complete coverage again , with wireless speeds up to 10 megabits ( supports b/g) . The data facilities are hosted separate to reduce hacks/attempts, and un-needed network traffic. The network now has combined speeds of 40 megabit.

With the demand for remote everything, wireless is more in demand now than ever. The network has several additional towers being built and interconnected, building the largest wifi network , in central Texas, once completed, by end of 2010.

Windows Xp Server 101 (part 1)

Have been asked to demo a few applications that are built for Windows (tm) platform without the server platform cost. Can an XP sever be deployed with limited issues? Up until recently I would have said not without a physical firewall , just for the exploits alone of needed things like PHP, Apache and mySQL.

I found this current pattern that seems to survive network attacks and is free except windows license or hardware. On our donated unit, its a dell 1500 ( dual 1 GHz proccessors, with 1/2 gig of ram) with
standard raid , cdrom, dual nics and dual USB 1 ports. This unit came with an 18 gig drive installed in a sled, with expansion in both raid formations and capacity if needed.

First I start with my OEM cd, from Dell. Reloading orginal OS takes time, so kick back and relax.

Once machine is running on the net visit out archives for the cd ISO of selected setups:

VOIP PBX for windows - under production
VMware for Windows - under production
WAMP server for Windows

------------------------------------------

current status:

building cd ISO's and eLearning system for those needing support.

Hint
Once you have the machine running, start on your service pack upgrades.
Again dont get in a fuss, relax and give your machine time to update.
nothing worse than rushing and having to do all over again, because you
accidently hit the wrong key.

Burn Cd's using freeware IMGBurn to Cd's
(IMGBurn support / web site / download)

More to come ( part 2)

Software Review: Nmap - 5 Stars

Nmap runs on all versions of Windows since NT, including 2K, XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Server 2003/2008. Please read the Windows section of the Install Guide for limitations and installation instructions for the Windows version of Nmap. In particular, read about the special Windows 2000 (Win2K) dependencies if you use that platform. You can choose from a self-installer (includes dependencies and also the Zenmap GUI) or the much smaller command-line zip file version.
The Nmap executable Windows installer can handle WinPcap installation, registry performance tweaks, and decompressing the executables and data files into your preferred location. It also includes the Zenmap graphical frontend. Skip all the complexity of the Windows zip files with a self-installer:

Latest stable release self-installer: nmap-5.20-setup.exe
We have written post-install usage instructions. Please notify us if you encounter any problems or have suggestions for the installer.
For those who prefer the command-line zip files (Installation Instructions; Usage Instructions), they are still available. The Zenmap graphical interface is not included with these, so you need to run nmap.exe from a DOS/command window. Or you can download and install a superior command shell such as those included with the free Cygwin system. Also, you need to run the Winpcap and Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package installers which are included in the zip file. The main advantage is that these zip files are a fraction of the size of the executable installer:

Latest stable command-line zipfile: nmap-5.20-win32.zip
Nmapwin installer:

Nmapwin has been removed from this download page because it is obsolete. Try Zenmap (included in our installer) instead. By the way, eEye's old NmapNT is even more obsolete, don't use that either.
Troubleshooting
If you have trouble using the Windows version of Nmap (strange error/compile/install/runtime messages) (and you have read the instructions, try the following:
  • Does the error say "INSTMSIA.EXE not found"? Then download and run it from here. If the error asks for "InstMsiW.exe" instead, get it here.
  • You might want to try installing the Windows Network Monitor Driver Protocol.
  • Check for error messages in the Windows event log (On at least WinXP, the Event Viewer can be opened by running "eventvwr").
  • Ensure that you have the latest version of WinPcap installed.
  • Perhaps someone else has reported the problem. Try reading recent Nmap-dev list archives.
If Nmap still doesn't work for you, please send a detailed report the problem.

Software Review: WinSock XP Fix - 5 Stars

WinSock XP Fix offers a last resort if your Internet connectivity has been corrupted due to invalid or removed registry entries. It can often cure the problem of lost connections after the removal of Adware components or improper uninstall of firewall applications or other tools that modify the XP network and Winsock settings. If you encounter connection problems after removing network related software, Adware or after registry clean-up; and all other ways fail, then give WinSock XP Fix a try. It can create a registry backup of your current settings, so it is fairly safe to use. We actually tested it on a test machine that was having a Winsock problem due to some Adware removal, and after running the utility and rebooting, the connectivity was restored.
